First green flag for Philips Park cemetery Philips Park cemetery has been awarded a Green Flag for the first time in its history. It is one of 35 green flags, that Manchester’s parks and green spaces have won this year with 33 being awarded for parks and two for cemeteries. This is three more than last year and more than any other local authority in the UK for the fifth consecutive year. Alexandra Park in line for £2million improvements Alexandra Park in Whalley Range is in line to receive £2million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its restoration. Manchester City Council’s first round bid, which outlines the proposals for the park’s improvement, has been successful beating off tough competition to progress to the second round of the bidding process. Passing the first round is an endorsement by the HLF of the outline proposals and means that the project meets the required funding criteria. ConDem cuts begin to bite - Merseybank library on hold A new development for the Merseybank area of Chorlton is under review following funding cuts announced by the ConDem coalition government. Plans were in place for a new outreach library and community care development to be created for Merseybank, with a portion of the funding due to come from Manchester City Council. In light of recent budget cuts however, the city council is currently unable to make any financial commitments.
